The first 30 days running a new convenience store
Taking over or opening a convenience store is a sprint: the doors are open, the trucks are coming, and the systems that should be running the store are often still in your head. Here’s a 30-day plan to get from cold start to running tight, in the order that actually matters.
Week 1: suppliers and the shelf
List every distributor and DSD route the store will buy from, and get each account active. Walk the store and capture what’s actually on the shelf — this becomes the spine of your price book. Don’t chase perfection; capture your top-selling items first, because a third of your buying hides in the top 50 SKUs.
Week 2: the price book and margins
Put a current cost and a retail price on every item you can, and look at the margin. This is the single highest-value setup task: a store that can see item-level margin from day one never develops the slow leaks that take over stores where nobody knows what anything costs.
Weeks 3–4: the ordering rhythm and the back office
Build a standing order sheet per supplier, organized the way you walk the store, with par quantities based on how fast things sell between deliveries. Set a delivery grid so every truck is met and checked against the order. Then turn on the back-office basics — invoice capture so costs stay current, and reports you’ll actually read.
Do it in one app, not five
The reason new stores stay chaotic past 30 days is usually tool sprawl: ordering in one place, the price book in a spreadsheet, invoices in a drawer. Starting new, you can skip that: run ordering, the price book, and the back office in one system from the first week. StoreQueue’s ordering is free to start, the back office turns on when you’re ready, and because they share data, the work you do in week one keeps paying off in week four. Open with the systems in place and the first 30 days set the store up instead of burying you.
Put it to work on your store.
StoreQueue brings every distributor into one cart with your back office attached. Plans for every store size.
